Meropeion Foundation, Agia Sophia

The non-profit Meropeion Charitable Foundation was founded by Anna Theodoropoulou, in honour of her daughter Meropi, who died prematurely at the age of 11.

Established to educate poor girls, the foundation is housed in a privately owned building on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, facing the Acropolis.

Constructed sometime between 1915 and 1920, the building and its yard are reminiscent of old Athens, with the adjacent Agia Sophia. The church was named after an important archaeological discovery made there when construction crews uncovered an ancient statue of the Goddess Athena, Sophia in Greek, the goddess of wisdom.
