The National Gardens

The National Gardens are located in the heart of Athens, next to the Parliament Building, and near Syntagma Square, with entrances from Amalias Avenue, the Zappeion, Herodus Attikou Street and Vasilissis Sofias Street.

Founded by Queen Amalia in 1836, the Royal Palace Gardens were initially planted by Bavarian horticulturalists. Known today as ‘The National Gardens’, this spacious park is a thriving botanical paradise with an impressive array of local greenery.

Find a peaceful escape right in the middle of the Athenian metropolis. Whether strolling the paths or meditating among ancient ruins, there’s no place better (or more convenient) to get away from the city’s hustle and bustle.

The garden is home to thousands of birds, exquisite sculptures and busts of Greece’s prominent historical figures.

The garden was once home to a small zoo, filled with animals native to Greece. Today it features a small coffee shop (exit to Irodou Attikou Street), a children’s library and a playground.
