The Museum of Modern Greek Culture (MMGC) is the only public metropolitan museum of the Ministry of Culture that deals with the modern cultural heritage of Greece. In 2013 its new permanent exhibition was inaugurated in the heart of Athens’ historical centre, in Monastiraki, in a building block surrounded by the streets of Adrianou, Areos, Kladou, and Vrysakiou, as well as in the Tzisdarakis Mosque.
A magical neighbourhood of modern Athens, with buildings dating from the 18th century to the early 20th century, which along with the museum objects they contain and the surviving monuments that surround them, form a peculiar monumental and cultural landscape in the wider urban plan.
The permanent exhibition extends in 10 buildings and presents aspects of the modern greek culture from the 18th century until today, through artefacts of the country’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
Around 3.000 museum objects, digital exhibits and visual material, family exhibits, premises for educational programmes and temporary exhibitions, a conference room and an outdoor theatre and rest areas, all these make up the image of a contemporary museum with its own, special identity. In the Museum’s courtyard there is also a café and a museum shop for the visitors.
The Museum of Modern Greek Culture along with its annexes “The Bath House of the Winds”, a monument of the Ottoman period and the only one remaining of the public baths in Athens, in 8 Kyrrestou str. in Plaka, as well as the exhibition “Man and Tools: Aspects of labour in the pre-industrial society” in 22 Panos str. in Plaka, is a museum network that turns the museum visit into an attractive experience of knowledge and entertainment in a historical neighbourhood that preserves the history of the city of Athens and its evolution throughout the centuries.
