Built in 1759 in Monastiraki Square by Mustafa Aga Tzisdarakis, the Tzisdarakis Mosque was originally known as the Mosque of the Lower Fountain.
In 1915, it underwent restoration by Anastasios Orlandos and was repurposed for museum use in 1918, becoming part of the newly established Museum of Greek Handicrafts.
Inside, the intricately adorned mihrab, featuring floral motifs and stalactites, has been preserved, while the founding inscription remains on the lintel of the entrance.
Nowadays, the mosque functions as a branch of the Museum of Modern Greek Culture, housing the exhibition dedicated to the Museum’s history from its opening in 1918 to the present day. This exhibition vividly portrays the cultural contexts that have shaped its curatorial approach, from the Museum’s first acquisition – a 17th-century vest from the women’s costume of the island of Skyros – to more contemporary displays that connect artifacts with the stories of those who once used them.
